Contradictory beauty and multifaceted transience characterise the photographs of spaces and landscapes by Swedish photographer Helene Schmitz. Her series ‘Earthworks’ (abandoned ro oms filled with sand) and ‘Sunken Gardens’ (an overgrown butterfly farm in the jungle) even approach a kind of claustrophobic serenity in their closeness and sense of intrusion. Similarly, “Kudzu Project” portrays another kind of suffocation, wherein she turns her lens on the overwhelming tendencies of a specific plant. Schmitz’s work thus makes us question our preconceptions of nature. Published on the occasion of an eponymous exhibition at Dunkers kulturhus in Helsingborg.
