Heliodor is the name given to the yellow variety of Beryl, and is one of the lesser known members of the Beryl family. The name Heliodor comes from the Greek 'Helios' for Sun, and 'Doron' for gift, translating literally to 'gift from the sun'. For some Heliodor crystals, heat treatment will actually turn them green-blue, in which cases they are then sold as the more desirable heated Aquamarine and reach a higher price than for their original yellow colour. This yellow colour is usually caused by iron within the crystal structure.
