The very definition of pub rock, in its purest form, the music of Hello Sailor is well and truly soaked into the beer mats and bar carpets all over NZ. They released their self-titled debut album in 1977 after two years of playing countless gigs up and down the country honing a reputation as one of the great touring acts whose live energy was palpable. With a lead singer / saxophonist in Graham Brazier they had the ultimate showman who could command the audience’s attention the moment he opened his mouth. Two singles from their debut record, ‘Gutter Black’ and ‘Blue Lady’ quickly became staples of top rating rock station Radio Hauraki and are well ensconced in the lexicon of great New Zealand songs.Seemingly at odds with the UK punk influences that were clearly evident in many of their contemporaries, Hello Sailor were nevertheless purveyors of the finest rock n roll that any young suburban band could hope to achieve.
