Historically, the Hemis Kachina Doll has been used for two purposes: to pray to for rain near the harvest season, and as a piece to present during the Home-Going Ceremony, which is when the Kachina spirits leave to the mountains for six months. The Hemis Kachina is particularly important in this ceremony, as it is said to be the first Kachina to bring corn to the Native people, ensuring future corn crops. The squared, crown-like headdress of the traditional Hemis Kachina is representative of its main purpose: fertility among the tribal lands. The carved headdressing can be very elaborate, detailing even the crops one hopes will grow. In addition, the Hemis Kachina is believed to bring great happiness along with the harvest. It is thought to be one of the most displayed and loved Kachinas because of its deeply rooted historical significance and representation of happiness, abundance, and continued life.
