It is traditionally used as a natural, calorie-free sweetener, particularly for teas and other beverages, though some people detect a faint, minty, or liquorice-like aftertaste. This plant is typically grown as a tender, low-spreading ground cover or as a trailing "spiller" plant in pots and hanging baskets. It is highly sensitive to cold and must be protected from frost.
