The flavor is crisp, firm, acidic, and astringent. Primarily used for cider, it can also be made into crabapple jelly. Pollination:This variety is a good pollinator for other apple trees that bloom mid-season. History & Characteristics:Discovered in Virginia in 1817, the Hewes Crabapple is a cross between a North American wild crabapple and European varieties. It was a favorite of both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Partly self-fertile. Mature Size:12-16 ft. Storage:Keeps well in cold storage.
