Finally, guilt by association—when back in the old world, even in the same urban village of Long Beach, kindred spirits Mary Animaux and Veronica Cruz didn’t cross paths until now; because maybe the world was always this shattered and maybe sometimes it takes a bigger disaster to shake up the pieces and get truly with it.
