Trivalent chromium (CrIII) and hexavalent chromium together compose what is normally called "total chromium". Chromium may convert between the trivalent and hexavalent states in both water and the human body depending on the environmental conditions. While trivalent chromium is an essential nutrient, hexavalent chromium is a potent human carcinogen that was cast into the spotlight by Erin Brockovich. Chromium occurs in both natural deposits, as well as in manufacturing processes such as electroplating and pigment factories. Update:In April 2024, the State of California adopted an MCL for hexavalent chromium of 10 parts per billion (PPB) in drinking water. The MCL for this contaminant was based on documentation that treatment across the State is economically feasible, that water rates would remain affordable, and that the 10 PPB level is protective of public health by reducing the risk of cancer and health effects from liver toxicity.
