Yellowbud Hickory offers remarkable growth speed and adaptability, making it a resilient choice for varied landscapes. Offered as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting, these trees are ready to settle into their permanent locations before top growth begins. When planted correctly, this format supports the development of the species' characteristically deep taproot, which is critical for long-term stability and access to deep soil moisture. Also known as Bitternut Hickory, Carya cordiformis prioritizes root development during its early years. The initial top growth may appear modest compared to the substantial root system, a natural strategy that anchors the tree and prepares it for vigorous future growth. Our current inventory is grown from seed collected in Ghent, NY. This species excels in riparian buffer zones due to its tolerance for flooding, yet it performs equally well on drier upland sites. It thrives in moist soil with full sun, eventually reaching 70 feet in height and 50 feet in width. Beyond its utility in erosion control, the tree serves as a larval host for Banded Hairstreak and Hickory Hairstreak butterflies. It produces abundant thin-shelled nuts, typically on a bi-annual basis, which are prized by wildlife and can be cold-pressed to produce a high-quality cooking oil.
