Hidden Gem focuses on one of South Maui's smaller coastal spaces rather than a broad panoramic horizon. The composition is built from a few simple elements: dark lava, pale sand, s hallow water and the irregular boundaries where those surfaces meet. Lance was interested in how much visual structure exists inside a relatively intimate place. At normal viewing distance, the cove reads quickly through contrasting shape and color. At closer range, those boundaries become more complicated. Lava breaks into individual surfaces. Sand changes tone near the waterline. Shallow water reveals depth, bottom texture and subtle color variation. Although Hidden Gem is smaller in concept than Lance's monumental panoramic work, it comes from the same instinct: move the camera into a position that makes a familiar environment reorganize itself. The finished print preserves those small differences throughout the image so the scene remains visually active at close viewing distance. Show more
