This small quilt is sized at 31.5" x 32" and is best suited as an art piece. The pattern is unique to this quilt, it was lightly planned but also left open to improvisation as the quilt top began to take shape. It is made with a mix of natural fiber textiles - some hand dyed like the golden shades from marigold and pomegranate and the blues from indigo + osage orange. There is also cream cotton, natural colored cotton/linen and a blue and white ticking stripe. The back of the quilt is an improvised mix of cotton/linen hand dyed with madder root (pink) and a walnut + pomegranate shibori (tan with yellow). The front and back were machine pieced, meaning the patchwork is machine sewn. The quilting, meaning the stitches running throughout, is done by hand with a cream color cotton sashiko thread in 1" rows. Hand quilting is a very laborious and time consuming process but the impact of the hand stitches cannot be mimicked with a machine. The quilt binding is made from a mix of fabrics and is also hand sewn. This lightweight quilt has 100% cotton batting.
