How did the hippo get it's name? The word hippopotamus comes from the greek word "Water horse". Okay, so it is true they like the water, and are very protective of it - it is the only place they are territorial, but they aren't great swimmers and they look very different from a horse, at least to me. Anyway, hippopotamus IS a word that children love. I believe they gravitate to this animal because of its name...heavens knows it's not because of their good looks! So, what does that say about the power of words? What does it say about the power of books, and reading those books?
