Hirdmen were the elite warriors of a Viking force. They were far better equipped than the rank and file Bondi, wearing fine mail shirts and carrying well-crafted swords and axes. T hese men made up the personal retinue of Viking Jarls and Kings and would be at the forefront of any battle, desperate to prove there worth to be mentioned in a victory saga or to join their ancestors in Valhalla through a heroic and glorious death.
