Piper auritum Discover the unique and irreplaceable flavor of Hoja Santa, a versatile and aromatic herb cherished in the traditional cuisines of central and southern Mexico. Also k nown as yerba santa, Mexican pepperleaf, or the root beer plant, this lush, heart-shaped leaf brings a rich, multi-layered taste to a wide range of savory dishes. When used fresh, Hoja Santa serves as an excellent wrapping for tamales, meats, and cheeses, releasing its signature aroma as it cooks. While the dried leaves can still be used in cooking, they become brittle and lose much of their bold character. Its flavor profile is a delicate balance of pepper, anise, eucalyptus, nutmeg, mint, tarragon, and a bold hit of sassafras—the note that gives it its "root beer" nickname. Add a touch of the "sacred leaf" to your garden and elevate your meals with a flavor that’s truly one of a kind. Hardy in zones 8-10. Hoja Santa plants start shipping mid-May in 4-inch pots.
