The current Hojicha powder is a light roast and more sesame profile than chocolate in our darker profile. Hojicha originated in 1920s Kyoto, devised by a resourceful tea merchant t o use the leftover tea leaves, stems, stalks, and twigs. Pan-roasted over charcoal, this subcategory of Japanese green tea quickly became popular thanks to its inviting aroma and caramel-and-woodfire flavor.
