Long-Lasting Pink Color on a Space-Saving Shrub Why Hopi Crape Myrtle Shrubs? If you’ve been looking for rich pink color and blooms that withstand the harshest of climates, look no further than the Hopi Crape Myrtle. Cold hardy down to 0 degrees, the Hopi handles large amounts of snow, ice and freezing temperatures with ease. In fact, it requires virtually no upkeep. It’s ideal for chilly weather up north, thriving down to 0 degrees in zone 6, or hot, arid climates out west – especially since it’s often used as a ‘fireproof’ shrub in areas prone to wildfire. So, the only work for you is planting. Once your Hopi is established, it needs very little water. And it resists pests and diseases like a champ, making harsh chemicals and spraying unnecessary. Another perk that you won’t get with other Crape varieties? Long-lasting color and space-saving growth. With the Hopi, you get huge clusters of full pink blooms on a semi-dwarf form that you can keep as a shrub or train as a tree. While other Crape Myrtles can reach 30 feet or more, the Hopi tops out at 10 feet. And it still packs a punch of vibrant color for an entire four months, June to September. Plant it in your flower beds, in containers near your entryways, or in colorful borders next to your driveway. No matter where it grows, it attracts tons of attention with its round, compact canopy. Get your Hopi Crape Myrtle today! Planting & Care 1. Planting: Select a location with well-drained soil and full sun (6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily). Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Place your Hopi in the hole and make sure that the root crown (where the root ball meets the trunk) is level with the soil surface. Tamp down the soil lightly as you backfill the hole and then water after you’ve finished to settle the soil. Mulch the surrounding soil to conserve moisture. 2. Watering: After planting, water weekly for the first growing season. If you live in a hot and dry climate, you may need to water young trees twice or three times weekly. If you’re not sure when to water, simply check the surrounding soil about 3 inches down for dryness. Water when the soil here is dry. 3. Fertilizing: Feed yearly with a high-nitrogen fertilizer, such as a 20-10-10 slow-release formula, in the early spring. 4. Pruning: To shape, remove all but 4 to 5 strong trunks and then remove the lateral branches around the bottom half of the tree. To encourage branching, make your cuts on the longer, thinner limbs and remove leaves growing from the trunk. Also, trim away any damaged or dead branches during the late winter.
