How Artists See Play: Sports, Games, Toys, Imagination by Colleen Carroll, is an engaging art book for children from Abbeville Press. This interactive book is part of the award-winning "How Artists See" series, designed to teach children about the world by looking at art, and about art by looking at the world. The theme of this volume is "play," and it explores how great artists have depicted sports, games, toys, and imagination throughout history. It features sixteen diverse works of art, from well-known artists such as Marc Chagall and Norman Rockwell, representing a variety of styles and cultures, including ancient Egyptian and Native American art. The book is far from a dry art history lesson. Its conversational text is filled with thought-provoking questions and imaginative activities that encourage kids to interact directly with the art. For example, it might ask them to imitate a pose from a sculpture to understand the physicality of it. This hands-on approach promotes self-exploration and helps children appreciate their own unique visions. At the end of the book, you'll find artist biographies, suggestions for further reading, and a list of museums where the featured works can be found.
