Although many fragments of pewter spoons have been excavated in and around the site of the Pilgrim settlement in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the only whole, mold-made, pewter spoon ever recovered was found at the site where the home of Joseph Howland, son of Mayflower passenger John Howland, stood. Amazingly, that original rat-tail, wavy-end spoon and the circa 1690 bronze mold that produced it were reunited. The style and shape of the spoon and the portrayal of the reigning monarch, King William, on the handle is indicative of the period. This spoon and the original "Howland Spoon" are nearly identical, differing only in the superior quality of the pewter used here and the maker's touchmark L on the back.
