The story of HP sauce goes back to a Nottingham grocer named Frederick Gibson Garton, who evidently came up with the distinctive blend of malt vinegar, tomatoes, dates, tamarind and molasses. His product was called The Banquet Sauce, but when it became so popular that the sauce was served in the House of Commons, Garton changed the name to HP for Houses of Parliament. Sadly, Garton accrued serious debt -- to a vinegar company! -and eventually sold his recipe and product name for 150 pounds.
