Hugh Hamer Rum Cask Finish Bourbon 750ML is a 103-proof (51.5% ABV) cask-finished bourbon sourced from MGP in Indiana and finished in Caribbean rum barrels. This expression earned a Gold medal at the USA Spirits Ratings, validating the interplay between its unusually corn-forward mashbill and tropical rum-cask influence.Quick Facts: ABV: 51.5% (103 Proof) | Origin: Lawrenceburg, Indiana, USA | Aged 4+ Years, Rum Cask Finished | Distillery: MGP (sourced)Production & HeritageHugh Hamer sources its bourbon from MGP of Indiana, one of the most prolific and respected contract distilleries in American whiskey. The mashbill—99% corn and 1% malted barley—is notably corn-heavy even by bourbon standards, producing a base spirit with pronounced sweetness and a clean, malleable character. After an initial maturation of four to six years, the whiskey undergoes a secondary finishing period in Caribbean rum casks. That high-corn profile proves especially receptive to cask finishing; the spirit readily absorbs the molasses-rich, tropical character imparted by the rum barrels, resulting in a layered bourbon that straddles two distinct spirits traditions.Tasting NotesAroma: Dark rum spice rises first, followed by waves of molasses and dried stone fruit. A subtle undercurrent of brown sugar and baking spice rounds out the nose.Taste: The entry is immediately sweet and salty, with caramel landing squarely on the palate before transitioning into persimmon pudding and raw cane sugar. Mid-palate, tropical fruits emerge—pineapple, mango, and papaya—alongside a warm rum-spice accent that keeps the sweetness honest. The high proof pushes flavor into every corner without turning harsh.Finish: Medium-long, delivering pure caramel and balanced oak with lingering island-fruit character—dried pineapple, mango, and a hint of plantain. The rum-cask influence stays present but never overwhelms the underlying bourbon structure. How to Drink Hugh Hamer Rum Cask FinishAt 103 proof, this bourbon rewards a few drops of water or a single large ice cube, which opens the tropical aromatics considerably. Neat pours reveal the full complexity of the rum-cask finish for those who enjoy barrel-proof intensity. For cocktails, try it in a Rum Old Fashioned riff—its built-in rum character replaces the need for a split base. A Mai Tai variation using this bourbon in place of aged rum bridges the gap between tiki and whiskey culture with surprising coherence. It also excels in a Brown Derby (bourbon, grapefruit juice, honey syrup), where the tropical notes amplify the citrus backbone.Best For Bourbon drinkers exploring cask-finished expressions for the first time Gifting a rum enthusiast who wants to cross over into whiskey Building a high-proof home bar anchored around versatile, cocktail-friendly bottles Side-by-side tastings comparing finishing-cask influence on corn-heavy mashbills Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Hugh Hamer Rum Cask Finish taste like? Grilled pineapple or mango brings out the bourbon's tropical side. Pecan pie mirrors its caramel sweetness. Jerk chicken echoes the rum-spice notes. Dark chocolate with sea salt complements the sweet-salty palate. Bananas Foster is a natural dessert match given the shared rum character. What sizes does Hugh Hamer Rum Cask Finish come in? The standard release is a 750ml bottle. Is Hugh Hamer Rum Cask Finish worth the price? It positions as a mid-premium bourbon that delivers above its weight class thanks to the rum-cask finishing step, 103-proof bottling strength, and four-plus years of age—strong value among finished bourbons at this proof point. Why Hugh Hamer Rum Cask Finish? The 99% corn mashbill is the key differentiator here. That extreme corn ratio creates a spirit with an almost blank-canvas sweetness, allowing the Caribbean rum casks to imprint deeply during finishing—far more so than a typical rye-heavy bourbon would permit. The result is a genuine hybrid character: unmistakably bourbon in structure, yet rich with the molasses and tropical-fruit signatures of aged rum. A Gold medal at the USA Spirits Ratings confirms the execution is sound, and at 103 proof the flavor density holds up equally well neat or in a shaker.
