The Hughes 500D, also known as the MD 500D due to later manufacturing by McDonnell Douglas and now MD Helicopters, is a prominent model within the long-standing MD 500 series of light utility helicopters. Developed from the Hughes 500, a civilian version of the US Army's OH-6A Cayuse, the 500D became the primary model in 1976. It featured a more powerful engine (Rolls-Royce 250-C20B) and a five-bladed main rotor for reduced noise. The distinctive T-tail design was introduced with the 500D. Production of the 500D continued until 1982 when it was superseded by the MD 500E. 1,200 Hughes 500D helicopters were delivered. Deliveries began in 1976 and continued until 1982, when the model was superseded by the MD 500E. By June 1981, Hughes had delivered the 1,000th unit of the 500D.
