The first chakra – Los Angeles Our first issue is dedicated to the first chakra, the root, Muladhara. We start our journey at the beginning, the base of the spine, we get down to earth (the element of the 1st chakra). We dig our roots deep in the ground in order to grow tall. What is it to be grounded, to be rooted? How can we achieve a sense of belonging, how can we let go and trust that we’ve got this? We explore one of the biggest challenges of being alive - the demon of the first chakra - fear. All humans on this planet we call home have the same right to be here and we all fight for the same thing: to stay in the game. Fear is one of the most primal emotions - it helps us define danger and keep us alive. But fear is also a monster of the mind. How can we differentiate real and imagined danger? How can we get through it and liberate ourselves from the unnecessary fear that limit and blocks us? The fear of flying, of snakes, the fear of failure, of making a fool of ourselves? We traveled to the wellness mecca of Los Angeles to get out of our comfort zones and face our fears. We slept under the stars, got naked with strangers, immersed ourselves in cold water, breathed, chanted, danced, sweated, cried and laughed. We even walked out of a class or two when we just couldn’t take it anymore, but it was all part of the journey. And along the way we met the “evangelists” of this city of angels; the practitioners, movement artists, healers and nourishers who dedicate their lives to making ours better. They guided us through the first part of this journey in a way we hope we will inspire you. Get you moving. Challenge your fears. Get you out of your comfort zones and into the Human Shift.
