Hawaii’s state fish is a vibrant array of colors, and is well-known for its long name. Its name means “the fish that snorts like a pig” because its uniquely shaped nose causes it t o make grunting sounds. When they are being pursued by a predator, they make a snorting sound to warn others of the approaching danger. Early Hawaiians gave them this name when they saw the reef triggerfish digging through rocks and sand to find food while making grunting and snorting noises.
