Humulus lupulus, commonly known as hops, is a vigorous perennial climbing plant in the Cannabaceae family, valued for both its ornamental qualities and economic importance in brewing. Its leaves are opposite, deeply lobed, and rough-textured, providing dense foliage. The plant is dioecious, with male and female flowers borne on separate plants; the female flowers develop into cone-like strobiles rich in lupulin glands, which are the source of the characteristic aroma and bitterness used in beer production. In addition to its use in brewing, hops are appreciated in gardens for their fast-growing, decorative coverage of trellises, fences, and arbors, while also being known for their calming and medicinal properties.
