THE STORY BEHIND HYDRANGEA Hydrangea arborescens is also called smooth hydrangea, wild hydrangea and sheep flower. It grows across much of the eastern US and as far west as Kansas. This species of hydrangea likes moist soil and often grows in forests and near streams. Unlike its colorful cousins known for their eye-popping blue and purple hues, this hydrangea plant bears clusters of delicate, white flowers in the summer. Some have called it seven bark for its propensity to peel off in many layers of different-colored bark. Hydrangea root was used by Native American groups for targeted kidney and urinary support.
