Leaves pull water away from the head faster than the stem can replace it. Cut 1–2 inches off each stem at a sharp angle, then split the bottom inch of the stem with your knife to open up the woody base so it can drink. Get the stems into deep water immediately, in a cool spot away from heaters, air conditioning drafts, and direct sunlight. Mist the heads lightly with water. Hydrangeas drink through their petals as well as their stems. If a head wilts: recut the stem and submerge the entire head in a sink or tub of cool water for 30–60 minutes, then stand it back in deep water. Most heads fully recover within the hour.
