Alice Oakleaf Hydrangea. This selection was made on the University of Georgia campus by Dr. Mike Dirr and is an extremely vigorous plant. Of course it is quite old, but the origina l plant appears to be 12' high and 14' across, with upright rounded panicles of 10-14." It has a good burgundy fall color. I have seen "Oakleafs" growing in almost full sun, but they are naturally an understory plant in the wild; hence, they perform at their best with good drainage and filtered sun. If shade gets too dense, this will hinder good flowering. If one has a heavy clay soil, it is best to plant these on a slope to insure good drainage. Zones 3-9 Show more
