Munchkin is the oakleaf hydrangea for a small bed. Hydrangea quercifolia 'Munchkin' holds at 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, compact enough to work in a foundation planting or a narrow border where a standard oakleaf would outgrow the space. Part shade, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 9, and it fills out in three or four seasons.The flower panicles are large for a plant this size, up to 6 inches long, opening white in early summer and aging to pink through late summer. They dry on the plant and stand into winter.The leaves are deeply lobed and leathery, dark green through the season, turning mahogany red in fall and holding late.
