Left at the surface it grows faster, throws roots into the water column and shades the tank below — useful in a shrimp or fry tank. Planted, it grows more upright and compact. Both are correct; choose deliberately. It responds strongly to trimming. Every cut forces branching, which is how a few stems become a bush — and how you keep a fast plant from taking the tank. It strips nitrate quickly, which makes it genuinely useful in a newly cycled or heavily stocked tank. Replant the trimmed tops. Cut stems root within days whether planted or floated.
