Three inches of open-cell foam does what a rock l ayer does: holds an air gap under your substrate so water drains through instead of sitting at the roots. Water collects in the pores and evaporates back into the enclosure, feeding humidity instead of stagnating. Lay it flat on the glass, add a substrate barrier, build on top. When it's time to tear down, lift out one piece and rinse it. No scooping, no washing rock, no hauling it to the sink.
