What’s a Hypnotizer? Hypnotizers are spring-driven drawing machines that spin hypnotic, colorful spirals - you don’t draw the picture, you build the machine that draws it. Learners insert a wind-up mechanism into a foam handle and press a foam platform onto its connector, then turn the knob to wind an internal spring through its gear train. Releasing the platform lets it spin freely, and by resting a marker on the spinning, sticky-note-covered platform and guiding it slowly toward the center and back out, the paper does the moving and the spiral appears on its own. It’s an engaging way to bring big ideas like stored (elastic) energy, released (kinetic) energy, and gear-driven mechanical advantage to life, all while emphasizing pattern-making and creative experimentation. Layer a second color or reposition the sticky note off-center between winds, and overlapping spirals interlock into Moiré interference patterns - a connection to Op Art artists like Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely explored further in the guide’s classroom extensions.
