Gerhard Munthe was a Norwegian painter born in Elverum in 1849, trained under Johan Fredrik Eckersberg before spending several years painting in Munich. His early work stands out for its close, naturalist study of Norwegian landscape and rural life, shaped in part by his time at the Fleskum artists' colony alongside Erik Werenskiold and Kitty Kielland, before he turned toward decorative art and large-scale tapestry design later in his career.
