If we ever want to catch a fly, we know that something sweet like honey or the like will help you. Hence the common phrase, “you can catch more flies with honey than you will with vinegar.” However, flies will actually die from artificial sweeteners. They cannot tell the difference from the pure sweetener (honey) and the artificial sweetener (Hannah Keyser, “You Can Catch Flies with Honey, but Fake Sweetener Kills Them,” Mental Floss, June 6, 2014, ). Robert K. Rapa writes in The Expositors Bible Commentary that in the same way artificial sweetener can be dangerous to flies, artificial Gospels can be dangerous to believers. Rapa writes, “alternative gospels...distort God’s intended redemptive activity and leave humanity to suffer the just result of sinfulness. These gospels do not reconcile people to God, do nothing to remedy human sinfulness, and thus must be condemned in the strongest possible way—particularly since God has provided in the gospel of Christ the way of escape."
