James compares the hearer of the Word to someone who looks into a mirror, and when he walks away he forgets his reflection. He isn’t changed by what he has seen. “The main purpose for owning a mirror, is to be able to see yourself and make yourself look as clean and neat as possible. As we look into the mirror of God’s Word, we see ourselves as we really are” (Warren Wiersbe, The Bible Exposition Commentary [Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc., 1997], James 1:23–25). But they have just given themselves a cursory glance. James teaches us to look deeply at the perfect law of God, which will cause us to act, and in turn, be blessed (v. 25). Show more
