Have you ever signed up for a free subscription trial? It seems like a good idea, you get three months’–worth of service, and if you don’t like the way it works, you can just call and cancel. The problem is we forget to cancel and then get charged a fee. In a similar way, believers sometimes offer a trial period, but if some doesn’t sign up, their “service” is canceled when we behave as if the church is only interested in people they can add to the attendance record. We should take extra care to expect nothing in return when helping others (Luke 14:12–14). This includes their professions of faith. We should remain faithful in our love for others even if the people we are working to reach never accept Jesus. Show more
