The composer John Cage once visited Harvard for the purpose of experiencing an anechoic chamber. An anechoic chamber is completely silent, without even any echoes. Cage was perplex ed, then, to hear two sounds: one very high and one very low. An engineer explained that the high sound was his nervous system and the low sound his blood flow (Taylor, When God Is Silent, 45–46).
