Beginning on Feb 1 and ending on February 2, Imbolc is the Celtic celebration of the Goddess Brigid, who was evoked in fertility rites, and was said to visit virtuous households and bless the inhabitants during this holiday. Imbolc was celebrated by burning lamps and lighting bonfires in tribute to Brigid. Based on a Celtic tradition, Imbolc was also meant to mark the halfway point between winter solstice and the spring equinox in Neolithic Ireland and Scotland. Over the centuries, Brigid was adopted into Christianity as St. Brigid. On her feast day, an effigy of St. Brigid of Kildare is traditionally washed and surrounded by candles to dry, and stalks of wheat are transformed into cross talismans known as Brigid crosses. The crosses were usually hung over doors, windows and stables to welcome Brigid and for protection against fire, lightning, illness and evil spirits. The crosses were generally left there until the next St Brigid's Day. Wiccans and various other pagan groups celebrate Imbolc as one of the eight Sabbats in the Wheel of the Year, after Yule and before Ostara. In Wicca, Imbolc is also commonly associated with the goddess Brigid and as such, sometimes specific rites only for female members of a coven are performed during this period. Initiations into covens often occur during this festival as well.
