Prior to visiting Paris in November 2025, I was certain the best croissant I will ever taste would be from a local bakery tucked amidst the charming shops scattered throughout the City of Love. In the meantime, the next best thing was a small cafe within walking distance from our apartment. The croissants are baked fresh every day and melt in your mouth, rich with buttery goodness. If the croissants in Paris were better than this, we were in for a treat! But they weren’t. The pastries were delicious, to be certain, but none of the croissants we tried came close to the ones I could buy just steps away from my own home. We certainly didn’t try every croissant in Paris, and perhaps there are some that would change my mind, but amidst the sampling of delectable pastries was a greater message: sometimes what you’re looking for has been in your backyard the whole time.
