Indium's atomic number is 49 and its symbol is In. Indium is the softest non-alkali metal. It is so soft that it can be bent with your bare hands. When indium is bent it makes a fa int crackle noise which is the tiny crystal structure in the metal breaking apart. Indium gets its name from the indigo color that was first recognized in a spectrometer test. It is used to make solder, LCD screens, and metal seals of vacuums. Under normal conditions, indium is safe to handle, but if an individual inhales indium over a long period of time they can acquire breathing disorders. Show more
