Sunday, October 11, 2026 1pm-4pm If you are considering the purchase of an industrial sewing machine to elevate your sewing practice to include heavyweight materials, or are just curious about what kinds of projects a stronger machine would make possible, this is the class for you. This 3-hour, hands-on workshop will focus on harnessing the power and speed of servo and clutch motors on flatbed and industrial sewing machines, while guiding you through their set up and use. Participants will have multiple opportunities to sew a variety of heavyweight materials, such as leather, canvas, denim, vinyl and rubber. During the class, you will be introduced to the mechanics of industrial machine sewing, including machine and motor set up, parts of the machine and attachments for the machine, machine operation and maintenance, and troubleshooting and correcting common snarls that can hold you back from finishing a project. Participants must have experience using a domestic (home) sewing machine prior to class. You must know the basic parts of a sewing machine, and how to thread a domestic sewing machine to sew a seam. If you would like to attend this the Industrial Sewing Machine Basics Class, do not have this experience, participants may opt in to a same day, pre-class 1-hour Sewing Machine Basics Class for an additional fee. Terry owns and operates the Amend+Adapt Studio, a hub for textile and textile adjacent upcycling education, and maker of BicycleTrash products. 10+ years of experience using industrial sewing machines. 5+ years of experience repairing and restoring machines for commercial use. Katie Stack owns and operates Stitch & Rivet, a small batch manufacturing business specializing in leather and waxed canvas bags and accessories. 25+ years of experience using industrial sewing machines. 10+ years of teaching stitchcraft in heavyweight materials. We provide: Small class size so everyone gets sewing experience. Flatbed and cylinder arm industrial sewing machines and heavyweight material samples. Light snacks and hot and cold beverages. Skills you will leave with: Understanding the set up of an industrial sewing machine Threading a sewing machine Winding a bobbin Changing a needle Changing stitch length Threads and needles sizes used with industrial machines Presser feet and machine attachments for zipper, binding, piping, etc. Workshop Hours: This is a one time 3-hour class, with an optional 1-hour Sewing Machine Basics class.
