Approximately 44,000 patients in Ireland are affected by Healthcare Associated Infections each year. Learn how to implement effective infection control measures and contribute to a healthier, safer environment. Description This course offers a clear, practical introduction to the core principles of infection prevention and control. It guides learners through how microorganisms behave, how infections spread, and the proven measures that reduce healthcare‑associated infections and protect vulnerable people. The programme explores standard and transmission‑based precautions, effective sterilisation and disinfection, environmental cleaning, and safe waste management, while also highlighting the realities of infection control in busy healthcare settings. Learners gain an understanding of antimicrobial stewardship, outbreak management, and the role of vaccination in safeguarding both individuals and communities. It’s designed to build confidence, strengthen everyday practice, and support safer care across all healthcare environments. Assessments This course contains online self-assessments after each section and an online certification exam at the very end. The self-assessments do not count towards the final examination marks but simply give you an idea of how you are doing. On successfully passing the final certification exam you will be issued with a certificate. Duration & Other information You do not have to complete the online course in one sitting, and you can also break it into small chunks if you wish. Should you have to leave the course unexpectedly, it will remember where you were the last time you left it. The course should take approximately 60 minutes to complete.
