London: Richard Bentley, 1870. 12mo, xiv 468pp. Three quarter navy leather with navy cloth and spin e stamped in gilt; a.e.g. Marbled endpapers; 12 b&w plates with tissue guards and decorative red border on all pages of text. Edges a bit worn, especially to beveling on spine, outer edges of fixed endpapers discolored where they touch the leather binding, else internally a surprisingly clean, bright copy. Carmine edition, issued 30 years after the first book appearance of this collection by Thomas Ingoldsby, the pen-name of English clergyman Richard Harris Barham. Featuring 12 black and white engravings by various artists, including George Cruikshank and John Leech, this is a lovely 19th century edition of this wonderful collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry.
