Aspartame is an artificially-produced sweetener, with around 200 times the sweetness of normal sugar. It is produced from the amino acids phenylalanine and aspartic acid. Aspartame was first developed in the mid 1960s under the brand name NutraSweet, and today is also known by other brand names such as Equal, Canderel, AminoSweet and Sanecta. The safety of aspartame has been the subject of many controversies, which is why we prefer to leave it out of our products.
