Sodium silicate, also known as water glass, is formed by the reaction of sodium carbonate (washing soda) and silicon dioxide (a main component of sand). We use this ingredient in o ur dishwasher and laundry detergents to soften hard water, prevent corrosion in machines and improve the durability and effectiveness of the detergent granules. Sodium silicate is generally regarded as safe for use in household cleaning products when handled according to recommended guidelines.
