At parties and polite social gatherings people would ask me, "As an overseas contractor, what's it like over there?" To them over there was any place outside of the United States and when asked, I would automatically assume they meant my current deployment and would respond accordingly. Sometimes that meant Africa, Iraq, or Afghanistan. It could however have been Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain or Huntsville, Alabama. Their conversation would always begin with what was usually a sincere interest and then quickly degrade to the deer in the headlights stare. Since Vietnam, America has endured a long list of conflicts. Because of extended incursions into such places as Iraq and Afghanistan, most people struck me as politely disinterested with anything remotely Middle Eastern or African. I found the usual reason for their inquiry was typically spurred by an unplanned interest, that moment in the conversation where you realize that you have to say something although you really could care less. From Irvine, Texas to Baghdad. From Huntsville, Alabama to the bullet riddled streets of Monrovia, Liberia; my 13-year journey was full of amazement, adventure, and reward. Acquaintances became brothers, situations became hysterical, and tragedies became personal.Yes, overseas contracting is financially rewarding and demanding, it is also extremely challenging on relationships. I have been blessed with a supportive and understanding wife who's caring and backing was instrumental in my success. This book is a collection of short stories describing and recounting the gut level terror, the exquisite beauty of the people, places and the unique bonds of friendship associated with working in an unfriendly overseas environment.
