Short Course Trail Method: The Strategic Path to 15β30K Are you ready to step up to a short course trail race (15β30km) while enjoying the journey along the way? If you can already comfortably run 10km and have a consistent running routine, this 8-week program is designed to help you build the skills, strength, and endurance needed to take on the trails with confidence. I built this plan around my Raw Endurance philosophy β learning to trust your body and effort rather than constantly chasing numbers on your watch. Out on the trails, your watch is simply a guide. The focus is on developing your pacing, understanding your effort across changing terrain, and learning how to move efficiently through climbs, descents, and technical sections. The training is split into two 4-week blocks. Each block includes three weeks of building your fitness, followed by one easier week to allow your body to recover, adapt, and prepare for the next stage. Program Outline Feel-Based Training: I use a 5-tier intensity system β Easy, Aerobic, Tempo, Threshold, and VOβ/Fast β to help you understand your effort without becoming dependent on pace. Trails are always changing, so learning to adjust your effort based on the terrain is one of the most valuable skills you can develop. Dynamic Workouts: Iβve included a variety of purposeful sessions, including hill repetitions, short sharp intervals, tempo efforts, and trail-focused runs. These workouts help build climbing strength, improve efficiency, and prepare you for the demands of race day. Specific Conditioning: The program includes cross-training and runner-specific strength work to help you handle uneven terrain, improve stability, and build the durability needed for longer trail efforts. Mental Strategies: Trail running is about more than just fitness. Iβll help you practise simple mental cues to stay relaxed, maintain smooth technique on technical descents, and stay composed when climbs become challenging. Long Runs: The long runs gradually progress throughout the 8 weeks, building your endurance and time on feet without rushing the process. The goal is to arrive at your event feeling prepared, resilient, and ready to enjoy the experience. Prerequisites This program is designed for runners who can already comfortably complete a 10km trail run and have a consistent weekly running routine.
