A female Alaskan Coastal Brown Bear female and her cub were fishing in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve while we observed them. A male Alaskan Coastal Brown Bear came over the berm along Cook Inlet and took this intimidating stance to scare the female. Especially close to hibernation, the males kill the cubs and impregnate the females. The shock of the loss of the cub causes the female to go into estrus which is the goal of the male bear. In this instance the female pulled the cub closer to the group I was with knowing that the males avoid humans. Her tactic worked as the male eventually left the area. Show more
