There are few things in hunting as rewarding as watching a well-trained lab work. I've never been the guy who poured into a duck dog to make them the best retriever they can possib ly be, but I've always respected and admired those who do. Their dedication in the duck blind is second to none - except for the dog. In this oil painting I wanted to convey the dynamic energy of a black lab on a retrieve, bursting into the golden light of a cold, clear sunrise. The water was almost as important (an even harder to paint) than the lab itself in telling the story. I wanted to show that explosion that happens when a well trained duck dog bursts on the scene with a singular focus in mind. Every droplet helps to tell that story and guide the viewer through the composition. The mallard decoy is a subtle addition that helps to tell the story of the scene. Show more
