Intokazi is the Xhosa/Zulu word for “grown woman.” This painting is an ode black women, our cultural heritage and African artistry. I love to surround myself with reminders of home, my language, my people and it encapsulates memories of these experiences and encounters in a simple yet powerful food illustration that reminds me of my mom’s kitchen and the jokes about Inkomazi being the black South African households version of a vegeterian meal. I could have painted a giant red lobster with neon pink and white stripes or a paellla and an aperol spritz, but that holds no significant meaning for me or you. So I captured our story in way that reflects who we are in this big big world and the wider African diaspora. I wanted to you to have a reminder of Gogo calling at your little nieces and nephews running around outside the window, kicking red dust in each others faces to come inside and eat, the judgemental side eye from your cousin seeing you add sugar to your plate of Inkomazi and pap because you’d learnt that from your mates in boarding school, while your sister argues that they could have at least fried an egg for her cause she hates the sight of Inkomazi. I wanted you like me to have home, on your walls even though we are tens of thousands of kilometres away building our own.
