Inula helenium, commonly known as elecampane, is a robust herbaceous perennial in the daisy family (Asteraceae) native to Europe and western Asia. It typically grows 1.5–2 meters tall, forming an upright clump with stout, branching stems and large, coarse, deep green leaves that are oval to lance-shaped with softly hairy undersides. The basal leaves can reach over 50 cm in length, creating a bold architectural presence in the garden. In mid to late summer, the plant produces large, bright golden-yellow flower heads with numerous narrow, ray-like petals surrounding a prominent central disk, giving them a shaggy, sunflower-like appearance. These nectar-rich blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. Inula helenium thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soils, although it adapts to a variety of growing conditions once established. Its impressive stature, long-lasting flowers, and ability to attract wildlife make it an excellent choice for cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, naturalized plantings, and mixed perennial borders. Zones 3-8 Germination To germinate Inula helenium seeds, sow them on the surface of a moist, well-draining seed-starting mix and lightly press them into the soil without covering them deeply, as light helps encourage germination. Place the container in a bright location with indirect light and maintain temperatures between 18–22°C (65–72°F). Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged throughout the germination period. Seeds typically germinate within 2–4 weeks under favorable conditions. If germination is slow, a period of cold stratification at 1–5°C (34–41°F) for 2–4 weeks may improve results. Once seedlings develop several true leaves, transplant them carefully into individual pots and continue growing them in bright light with regular moisture until they are ready for planting outdoors.
